Called to Care Living Mission Every day - Karen - Flipbook - Page 15
Our friends and colleagues in the Mater have kindly
opened their doors and organised tailor-made tours of the
hospital. Exploring the Radiology Department, seeing
how a lab works, learning about patient care and even
seeing behind the scenes of the IT and catering
department has been hugely interesting and eye-opening
for YES learners. In particular, many of our young women
who are keen to pursue a career in health care have
benefited from learning about the wide variety of careers
available. We are currently exploring the possibility of
of work experience for some of our more advanced
students.
For several summers YES students have taken part in a
variety of volunteer projects in the Mater. This summer
they organised an 8international snack buffet9, offering
tastes from around the world while engaging in
conversations about the varied work in the hospital, the
YES project and – of course - favourite foods. The group
also spent time designing and creating an intercultural
window display, representing and celebrating the diverse
communities in YES, the Mater and Dublin in general.
YES students have also given their time to community
clean ups, revitalising yard areas, painting benches and
cleaning up flower beds. Yet another time, some of our
learners spent an afternoon engaging with some of the
older patients, playing cards, painting nails and learning
from each other.

Building bridges across cultures, languages and ages has
never been more enjoyable and easier than during our
trilateral collaborations – YES | Mater | Localise.
One of YES9s most rewarding project's is our Study Buddy
Homework Club, in which volunteers spend an hour a
week supporting an individual YES student with their
homework and studies. Through our collaboration with
the Mater we have recruited several fabulous volunteers
who have been generous with their time and expertise and
helped many a Leaving Cert student get those projects and
exams over the finishing line. As we approach the start of
another academic year, we would be happy to hear from
anyone in the wider Mater Network who might be
interested in contributing to the education and success of
some of our most dedicated students – all subject
expertise welcome.
