Sr. John of the Cross Award
Cross Award celebrates teams whose initiatives
I
nspired by the life and legacy of Sr. John of the
Cross Ferguson, a Mercy Sister who dedicated 70
years to caring for patients in this hospital, the
award recognises teams who place respect, dignity and
exceptional care at the heart of everything they do,
positively impacting patients, families and colleagues.
Last year's winners, the Mater Liaison Psychiatry Team,
were recognised for AMPP (Acute Medicine Proactive
liaison Psychiatry) — a proactive consultation-liaison
model embedded within the Acute Medical Short Stay
Unit (AMSSU).
Rather than waiting for referrals, a psychiatric registrar
joined the unit's daily team meetings to identify patients
who would benefit from mental health input, enabling
earlier assessment and more joined-up care between
physical and mental health teams. The results were
striking: four times as many patients accessed mental
health support compared with the previous year, referrals
were seen more than an hour faster on average, and 92%
of patients rated the service positively. Staff satisfaction
with the new model also outstripped the traditional
approach.
Reflecting on the achievement, Prof. Anne Doherty shared
that the team were honoured to receive this prestigious

award. She highlighted the importance of recognising
collaborative work that strengthens patient care, enhances
pathways between physical and mental health services,
and supports the delivery of timely, compassionate and
holistic care for all patients. Integrating mind and body
care in this way remains a core part of the Mater's mission
by ensuring that patients' psychological needs are
embedded in their physical care.
This year’s winning
team will be
announced on 23rd
September at the
Mission Awards
Ceremony, and will
