Issue: Sept. ‘26, Vol 2, Issue 4
elcome to another issue of
Mission Matter9s, and to an
issue that, perhaps more
than any other, captures what it
means to live our Mission every day.
Our theme this issue,8Called to Care:
Living Mission Every Day,9 reminds
us that mission is not confined to what
happens within our hospital walls, nor
is it simply something written in a
document. It is something we see in
the everyday choices, encounters and
acts of kindness that make the Mater
the very special place it is.
We begin with an overview from our
Director of Mission, before looking at
the continuing story of the Mercy
Sisters and the renovations at Mercy
International House — a reminder of
the remarkable legacy upon which our
hospital was founded.
We meet young people discovering
the meaning of volunteering within
the hospital, and explore some of the
seemingly simple things that can make
such a difference: the joy of a cup of
tea, and the kindness of walking
alongside others.
There is learning and friendship too,
through our local Study Buddy group,
while Phizzfest brings the colour,
creativity and community spirit of
Phibsborough to our pages. Our
Archives take us back in time to the
Four Masters9 Park, right beside the
hospital.
We also devote four pages to the
hugely important subject of addiction
recovery, highlighting the supports
available to those seeking a different
future.
And, of course, there is plenty more
including our 8Where in the Mater?9
competition, photographs celebrating
our wonderful staff and visitors, and a
special welcome to colleagues and
students and staff from North
Carolina University.
So, wherever you find yourself in this
issue, I hope you discover something
that makes you smile, think,
remember — or perhaps inspires you
to care a little more.
Thank you for reading, and for being
part of the Mission Mater9s story.
Warm regards,
John Deane-O’Keeffe
