Chaplaincy
The Heart & Soul of the Mater
We in the chaplaincy team at the Mater Hospital are
from different Christian traditions and faith
backgrounds. We collaborate with different Christian
and all other faith groups and work together to
provide holistic support to patients, families, and
staff, respecting the diverse spiritual and religious
needs of those we encounter every day.
Reactions to us can vary. Some are immediately
open, while others may hesitate at first. Patients
often feel comforted, knowing someone is available
simply to listen and assist patients in finding
meaning. Staff members too appreciate the quiet
support chaplains provide, often sharing their own
struggles in a safe space. Many are surprised to find
that chaplains are not just there for religious support
but for emotional and pastoral care as well.
Chaplaincy is not without its struggles however.
Witnessing suffering, especially when a patient is in
pain or a family is grieving for example. Feeling the
emotional weight of so many stories of loss and
struggle can be very difficult. Yet, witnessing the
effect of Sacramental Ministry, brings peace to the
person, particularly those whose lives are at the end
stage of life. Knowing that our presence makes a
difference, even if in small ways, is truly uplifting.
The chaplaincy team in the Hospital is not about
fixing things, but about being present in people’s
most vulnerable and precious moments. Knowing
that we provide even a small sense of comfort or
strength is the greatest reward.
Remember as staff too, you are never alone. Your
work is deeply valued and deeply respected. We see
the care and dedication you bring to your patients
every day but remember to take care of yourself as
well. After all, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
However, in the most difficult moments, know that
we are always there to support you, just as you are
there to support others.
