TY’s step into hospital life
Mollie Bruton, a nurse educator specialised in paediatrics, coordinates the Introduction to Life (IHL) Programme for
Transition Year students
Introducing the TY students to hospital
life is most certainly a multi-disciplinary
affair. Facilitators from over twenty
different professional groups including
medicine, surgery, nursing
physiotherapy & physiology,
occupational therapy, pharmacy,
radiography, medical physics, clinical
perfusion, laboratory sciences, health &
safety, and speech & language therapy,
all assist. Additionally, there is
representation on the programme from
diverse clinical areas including
emergency, critical, ambulatory and
inpatient care.
IHL is open to relatives of the MMUH
staff and it runs five times per school
year, accommodating over 100 students
to gain exposure to hospital life. Due to
demand, places are allocated via a
lottery system and participants come
from schools across the country. The
ongoing objective is to showcase the
variety of career opportunities available
in healthcare and without a doubt,
hands-on sessions are definitely a
favourite of students. The programme
culminates in a closing ceremony where
participants are awarded completion
certificates. One of the most common
questions asked by these young people
is how did the facilitator get to where
they are – which subjects did they
study in secondary school? How many
points did they get? Did they take the
