It is with great pleasure that I
welcome you to our first issue of
Mission Mater’s, a magazine
dedicated to celebrating the people,
the passion, and the purpose that
make the Mater Hospital the
extraordinary place it is.
At the very core of this publication is
a simple yet profound truth: it is the
people who bring heart to the Mater.
Every day, across every ward,
department, and corridor, dedicated
staff work tirelessly to provide
exceptional care with skill,
compassion, and commitment. This
magazine is for you, about you, and a
reflection of the incredible work that
happens here—work that changes
lives.
In this inaugural issue, we mark five
years since Covid 19 changed the
landscape of healthcare, reflecting on
the resilience and dedication of those
who carried us through. We shine a
spotlight on the hospital’s pharmacy
services, exploring the vital role they
play in patient care, and we sit down
for a conversation with Prof. Jim
Egan Head of the Transplant Unit,
who also leads as the hospital’s
Executive Clinical Director. His
insights into the future of care at the
Mater are not to be missed.
One of the highlights of this and every
issue will be our This is what Mater’s
feature — a double-page spread
capturing snapshots from across the
hospital, showcasing the many faces
and roles that make the Mater what it
is. It is a celebration of the teamwork
and dedication that often happens
behind the scenes but is felt in every
patient interaction.
Whether you are a nurse, doctor,
porter, administrator, allied health
professional, researcher, or work in
any of the countless roles that keep
this hospital moving, this magazine is
for you. We hope it informs, inspires,
and above all, reminds you that you
are part of something truly special.
Thank you for being the heart of the
Mater.
And yes, you know who you are!
The real heart of the Mater: Phlebotomist, Eva Kiassou and patient, share a light moment in the Phlebotomy Department.
