The Mater’s Journey
Honouring the past, building the future
My career in healthcare began as a general nurse,
and today, I serve as the Chief Executive Officer of
the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital
(MMUH). From an early age, I was encouraged to
work hard, aim high, and seize opportunities. This
mind-set, combined with a deep commitment to
patient-centred care, innovation, and the mission of
MMUH, continues to drive me.
I grew up in Tipperary as the youngest of six
children. My mother became a widow at just 33,
raising all six of us—then under the age of 13—on
her own. I was only three and a half when my father
passed away. Looking back, I realise how much my
upbringing shaped my approach to leadership and
my career. In our home, responsibility and capability
were shared, and that environment, coupled with my
determination, made me the person I am today.
I have been fortunate to have exceptional mentors
who have guided my growth, both personally and
professionally.
Now, in my leadership role, I am committed to
paying that forward — ensuring that the next
generation of leaders feel empowered, valued, and
seen. I draw inspiration from the hospital’s legacy of
compassion, excellence, and service, believing that
its mission and values are the golden threads that
run through its work.
At the heart of my leadership is a passion for
transformation — enhancing both patient outcomes
and the working environment for healthcare
professionals. My vision is to modernise the Mater
and ensure that it matters not just to its patients but
also to its staff. Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital
health represent a significant step forward for
MMUH. By integrating AI across departments, we
can enhance patient care, support clinicians, drive
innovation and improve efficiencies and outcomes,
while ensuring that technology serves the best
interests of our patients and staff.
We wish Mission Mater’s all possible success, and
know it will be a reflection of the compassion that is
the true centre of this wonderful hospital.
