for everyone, they both believe.
Another misconception is that it9s
complicated, 8when often it9s about
respect and awareness,9 they say.
Based on studies, 40% of the
LGBTQ+ community in Ireland avoid
or delay seeking healthcare, including
hospital care, due to fears of
discrimination, stigma, or a lack of
understanding from staff. The MMUH
working group therefore encourages
all staff to undertake HSE and
inclusion training.
Pride Month in June brings
celebration and visibility — how does
the Committee mark it, and why does
it matter within a healthcare
community, Mission Matters
enquired? 8Last year was fantastic9
they tell us as, 8we raised the Pride
flag and held a gathering with food
and music in the Four Masters Park,
along with the stand on Whitty Street,
which brought people together in a
really positive way.9 They also had
Brendan Courtney speak, who shared
his own unique perspectives and
experiences. This year will be no less
inclusive!
Finally Mission Matters ask, what9s
been a moment of joy, humour, or
unexpected fun from their time on the
Committee? People simply getting
together has to be one. 8During last
year9s Pride celebrations, staff from
different departments came together
in Four Masters Park to help us
celebrate9 they tell the Magazine.
8Seeing people chatting, laughing,
taking photos at the flag raising, and
just enjoying the atmosphere was
really special. Healthcare can be a
very busy and stressful environment,
so having moments where people can
connect, celebrate, and simply have
fun together means a lot.9
It9s very hard to disagree - and the
LGBTQ+ Committee, seem to be
hitting all the right notes.
Together: Healthcare is a busy and stressful environment - having moments
where people can connect, celebrate, and simply have fun together, means
everything to the LGBTQ+ Committee
Pride: Pride Month brings out both celebration and visibility of
the LGBTQ+ community @ MMUH - and long may it continue
