What does it take to keep a major institution like the Mater
functioning safely and smoothly 24 hours a day?
Keeping a major Hospital running safely 24-hours a day takes constant
planning, teamwork and rapid response behind the scenes. Through
preventative planning to reactive maintenance and close collaboration
with clinical and operational teams, the team helps create a safe, reliable
and comfortable environment for all. We also provide a 24 hour out of
hours engineering and maintenance on call service.
How has the role of Estates evolved in recent years?
Estates & Facilities Departments generally have moved well beyond
traditional maintenance to becoming a key part of how they improve
sustainability by embracing new technology and enhancing the overall
healthcare experience. The Estates & Facilities Department in the Mater,
along with our colleagues in the HSE, develop energy-efficient designs
and solutions for reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability
goals and targets through various initiatives. Technology also plays a
growing role with modern building management systems helping monitor
performance and improve efficiency. There is also a greater focus on
creating hospital environments that support patient and staff comfort.
What would surprise readers most
about the contribution the Estates
team makes to the overall patient
experience?
Many aspects of the patient experience
are shaped by the work of the Estates &
Facilities Department behind the scenes.
From maintaining critical infrastructure,
including lighting, electrical
infrastructure, plumbing, ventilation/air
conditioning, water quality, medical
gases and ensuring they operate reliably,
the Department plays an essential role in
supporting patient care every day. We
also support the Hospital's future
through sustainability initiatives and
capital projects that keeps facilities
modern and fit for purpose.
