I
have been serving on the Board of the Mater for almost nine years. I joined because I was asked, but
I stayed because I saw the care and compassion, the clinical excellence and the patient-centred focus.
The Mater is a vibrant, sometimes hectic place, where urgent acute and chronic are constant
descriptors of the work environment that operates above 100% capacity.
I have frequently been lost in the labyrinth of corridors leading to the hospital wards and departments. I
love big organisations because, even when you know your own job inside out, it’s always interesting to
see what other people do.
But the Mater adds another layer. I feel, every time I am here, that I could ask any individual one
question
